The issue is rarely about entering Canada; you will walk into it
nowhere near immigration offices and, quite possibly, other
people. The issue is getting back into the States. Have what you
need or be prepared to check out (or check in to) a Canadian cell
for a night or two. Fear not; they are nice cells.

>>>>Hi all, I just got my papers back from Canada. On them, they explain once and for all the papers that they want/need.
Verbatim(including spelling errors):"Identification: Persons entering Canada are required to carry proper identification. If you are a US citizen, you do not require a passport to enter Canada and the following forms of I.D. are acceptable to Canada Immigration:Primary Identification (stands alone)- Birth Certificate- Drivers Licence- Armed forces IDSecondary I.D. (may be used to support Primary ID)- Student Card- Social Security CardIf you are a temporary resident of the US or a visitor from any other country, you will require a passport. You should contact Canada Immigration to find out if you will require a visa. They may be reached at 1-888-242-2100. You must report immediately to the nearest Immigration office.Note: A passport is always acceptable as ID and is the optimum for Immigration purposes."So, there you have it.-mike
