Don't do it from KM. If intent on flipping north, bail out 
at Walker Pass, hitch down to Onyx, and take the Kern Valley 
regional transit bus to Lake Isabella with a connection to 
Bakersfield. Probably a 3 hour commute from the trail to 
Bakersfield, given favorable timing and luck. Bakersfield 
has a "national" airport (and rental car service), providing 
a possible alternative to the aforementioned 36 hour bus 
ride. (Several rental car offices are also located near the 
bus station in Seattle, a stone's throw from the Space 
Needle if I recall. [The date was 9-10-01, and I had just in 
time crossed the border back into the US following the 
completion of my hike.])
