[BULK] - [pct-l] Help! I need a GOOD suggestion...

Tall order ain't the end of it...

Virtually every trail above Alta Dena is going to have the same
conditions of Mt Lowe that you're trying to avoid...
Mt Lowe isn't under snow right now. I assume you're concerned with the
water flowing out of each and every ravine at the moment (a wise concern
to have right now). Going any lower in elevation simply compounds the
problem. Fording these torrents would be foolish. Go high and you'll
need snow/ice gear. The San Gabriels is not a friendly place to be right
now...

Might I suggest Joshua Tree? Or Anza Borrego? Drive a couple additional
hours and you can camp where you park your car, backpack into the desert
and see the spectacular wildflower bloom that's going on right now! JT
has lots of loop trails. I'd go cross country...
Heck, you'd even find flowing water out there! And all the sunshine this
weekend that you've been deprived of lately!
Take a look outside right now- The clouds are pushed up against the San
Gabriels right now while the sun is shining everywhere else...

(and lectures on preparedness and planning are NOT welcome here...
conditions have changed, and we're not entirely familiar with the area,
which is why I'm asking)

For those of you familiar with the hiking in Southern California, I
really need a miracle of a tip.

Our time frame is to leave Pasadena tonight around 9-ish tonight and
return by 1:00 on Saturday. Our original plan for a hike this weekend is
backfiring due to weather. We were going to leave tonight after work up
the Mt. Lowe Railway trail. However, due to the recent rainstorms, it's
not looking to be safe to hike up in that area of the mountains. We want
to make some miles this weekend without being terribly pinched by the
time factor or the weather conditions.

Can anyone suggest a good hike near the Pasadena area, within an hour's
drive, where we'd find camp in 3-5 miles from the break, and have a good
loop to do on Friday? I know it's a tall order, but we've already wedged
the schedule and arranged for time off (and babysitting at my end is a
bitch to arrange). Any suggestions would be useful. Any suggestions made
after 8:00 tonight would be pointless.

Thanks!!
