past two years. It really came into focus when two thru-hikers started
fires in So Cal last year. Trouble is, the PCT passes through numerous
agency lands and jurisdictions (BLM, NF, NP, and private). Knowing what
each jurisdictions' policy is difficult, and could change under varying
conditions.
One Californis fire permit issued by any ranger station on a walk-in basis
or obtained by FAX www.fs.fed.us/r5/lospadres/passes/campfire/ (permit
form link is in upper left and is a very slow pdf.) is good on all National
Forest and BLM land within California until the last day of each year.
They are free.
They are required for campfires. Gas stoves are mentioned on the form but
rangers have been a little unclear as to weather or not they are required
for campstoves. Only one person in a party is required to have one.
Ranger Station Info:1.858.673.6180 for San Diego County
FAX www.fs.fed.us/r5/lospadres/passes/campfire/ and they'll fax your
signed permit back to you.
