Yes, there is a simple way to hold your umbrella while on the trail. I have
posted my invention this several times on this list. Basically, you just go
to the hardware store and buy a piece of pipe foam installation (thick type)
and a 3/8 inch wood dowel. Cut them to a length that allows you to attach them
(Velcro straps) to your shoulder strap (either side depending on the sun/rain
conditions). I find that they should be long enough to be several inches
above your head when attached to your shoulder strap. Just put the umbrella pole
into the foam tube. Here are some specifics:
1. Duct tape foam and dowel together.
2. Tape some mailbox reflector tape on the holder too for safety for night
walking.
3. Use a mini bungie cord to hold the under frame of the umbrella snugly in
the holder. A surprise breeze can lift it out of the holder. I use a Velcro
strap and duct tape to hold the bungie to the holder.
4. When not in use, I just put the holder in a pack outside pocket.
Works simply for about 3 ounces of weight.
