[pct-l] PDFs, protection, and the PCT-L

hmmm....

once again i am reminded why i don't check out the
pct-l very often! though i haven't read all the wild
and varied responses, the original post about a PDF
Yogi guide seemed like a good question to pose.

i'm not an e-publisher, but publishing via PDF makes a
lot of sense for a variety of reasons. save trees and
other waste, save money in publishing and mailing, can
always have an current version available via the web,
folks can buy online and receive content immediately,
content with pretty color photos, live URL links, and
other cool stuff, etc.

a quick search on the web indicates that people and
companies DO successfully e-publish content that you
have to pay for. there are levels of security
available to PDF documents, both through adobe and
third-party folks (i.e. PDF and add-ins can do much
much more than the usual "Open it in free Adobe
Reader"). might there be some level of "piracy" of an
e-book, in particular an oft-updated e-hiking guide?
what are the trade-off in the positives vs. the
possible negatives? and on and on...

these all seem like things for a publisher (e.g. yogi)
to think about and having an intelligent discussion
about it could be cool. jumping to tons of conclusions
about copyright infringement, what people's motives
are (i.e. the worst!), hurt feelings, and everything
else seems like a big waste of time.

now... back to lurking and attempting to post
friendly, informative hiking information to the list
on a very infrequent basis.
