Regardless, I'd rather ask for forgiveness than denied entry. My feeling is, that whatever happens, it's all part of the experience.
Amen Sly! When I reluctantly returned into the US, I had nothing but ratty clothing, a worn-out backpack, some incredible memories, and some serious calluses. Permit...schmermit. When threatened with a free night's stay in a plush--not padded--jail cell, I welcomed and graciously accepted the opportunity. I was housed, fed, and bathed better than I'd been in close to half a year. My only regrets were having cost taxpayers some money and having a cell mate who snored like a runaway freight train. Still, it was all part of the experience.

Here's the rest of it: my box containing my passport, etc., never made it to Stehekin, where I was to pick all paperwork up. I panicked at first (it was, after all, post 9-11) but eventually thought, "what the hell, I'll be okay." Indeed I was. It might, however, be wise to be sure your permits, passport, etc., travels with you. But if you're a story seeker, like Sly and I, take your chances and enjoy the ride. It all works out, eh?
