On the subject of border crossings, I can attest that because my dad
lives in mexico, I have semi-regularly crossed the mexico border
nearest campo for the past dozen years or so, and never once have they
needed anything more than a driver's license or state ID card. In
fact, before 9/11, they didn't even ask for ID most of the time. My
experience with Canada has been that going there is somewhat
difficult, but getting back isn't so hard.
