[pct-l] NB Shoes.

I would send your second pair of breathable shoes to Agua Dulce. If your
first pair is still good when you get to Agua Dulce, you could bounce your
new second pair up to Mojave/Tehachapi or Sierra City (assuming you're
getting those boots at Kennedy Meadows).

Here's what I did in 2003:

First pair - I planned to use these from beginning of the trail to Agua Dulce
(mile 454). My second pair was waiting for me in AD. When I got to AD,
my first pair still had some life left, so I bounced my second pair from AD
to Mojave (mile 566).

Second pair - worn from Mojave (mile 566) to Kennedy Meadows (mile
703), and for most of Northern California. In KM I picked up more my
third pair, which were more durable. Bounced that second pair (which
only had 147 miles on them) from KM up to South Lake Tahoe (mile 1094).

Third pair - worn from Kennedy Meadows (mile 703) to South Lake Tahoe
(mile 1094). When I got to South Lake Tahoe, we heard there was still
snow on the PCT between South Lake Tahoe and Sierra City, so I kept
my Sierra shoes and bounced that second pair again - this time from
South Lake Tahoe to Sierra City. I think that second pair made it to
Dunsmuir (mile 1506), but they were really dead by then.

I picked up two pairs of size 15 NB shoes, (I normally wear 13/14, but I'm
accounting for swollen feet syndrome and I figure I can ski down some of the
inclines if needed!) If you are near the Boston area, get over to the town
of Brighton where you can get great deals on NB shoes. The NB store is on
Life St., just off the Mass. Pike. I picked up a pair of NB 856 and a pair
of NB 690 shoes for only $40.00 each after the store discount was applied.
Both pairs are lightweight with decent soles and they are VERY breatheable;
air passes right through them and the soles are removeable to insert a
better sole such as Superfeet, etc. I'm currently researching mid-weight
boots and I think I may go with the Scarpa ZG65 GTX, (does anyone have any
feedback on that boot.) Also, at what point do most people attempting a
thru-hike see their first pair of shoes wear out; I'd like to know what town
to have my second pair mailed to.

Take it easy,
