Would a GPS devise be recommended for a thru-hike?  I see in the FAQ section, that it may not be necessary (provided the compass and map skills are good), but I wonder.  Seems there is a fair amount of white-out on the Northern sections and I have heard from thru-hikers that the trail is not very well marked in general.  Thanks, John
