You are right on one thing.  I have never had an unstoppable tune 
running through my mind. Still I have had lots of thoughts about all 
sorts of subjects not even remotely connected to my trip.

Worse, on one ski vacation, I took days to stop obsessively thinking 
about problems at work. Especially when riding up the slopes in the 
chair lift. I doubt if music would have made any difference. Skiing 
downhill was mentally challenging enough to pull my attention to the 
present though.
