The off-topic discussion about Kansas tourism seems like a good opportunity to post a couple of question about the Great Planes:
Is there some east to west hiking route via the great planes that wouldn't be terribly boring? (Maybe something like paralleling the Missouri river).  Is there some bike route (perhaps the American Discovery Trail) that will promise me groves of trees every night so I"ll be able to hammock?
 
I'm not planing a coast to coast hike/ride next summer, just wanted to know the options.
