Elizabeth,

I opt to keep my hair long during thru-hikes, because
I prefer to pull it back off my neck when it is hot
(most of the time).  I had no trouble keeping it clean
- I often carried travel-sized shampoo packets into
the woods and washed it while out hiking (just don't
rinse your suds into springs or creeks -- do the
rinsing at least 100 feet or more from water sources).
