[pct-l] PCT Hikers per Capita

I am blessed to say that the PCT is 9/10ths of a mile down the road for me, and National Forests bookend this little town, Agua Dulce, which is an unincorporated township of Los Angeles County, and the Cities of Santa Clarita and Palmdale may be even closer than Pasadena or the City of Los Angeles.  I know this is only one of four towns the Trail actually passes directly through.  They're trying to relocate the Trail off the road, but I believe there's a hold-out property owner stalling the progress.

I've heard the same comment about Portland being the closest major city to a
designated wilderness area, but I don't buy it.  From what I see on the
mapping software, the southern edge of the San Gabriel Wilderness is only
about 5 air-miles from the northern edge of the Los Angeles Metroplex at
either Monrovia or Pasadena, and the PCT at that point is only about 13
miles away.  It looks like the PCT just barely crosses into the San Gabriel
Wilderness a few times on its north side.  The Cucamonga Wilderness about
the same distance from some of the more eastern suburbs, and the San
Bernardino Wilderness is less than 15 miles from San Bernardino

I also read in somewhere that, NoBo, Ashland was the first major city close
to the PCT.  Obviously, I don't buy that either.  It is not as close as Los
Angeleplex, and I don't see Ashland to be a major city.

I am fortunate to live east of Sandy, Oregon, which no one will ever confuse
with a "major US city", and I can be on the trail in the Mt. Hood Wilderness
in about a half hour if I want.
