Some lose, some really don't lose much, and some may gain - over a long
hike. I don't weight much to begin with: 125 in high school & 130 now. On my
previous longest hike, 390 miles over 45 days including all resupply stops or 0
days, the AT all of NH and most of ME(where I hit all 25 or so tree line &
above peaks with at least some view) I lost 2 pounds.
1/3 my body weight is 42 lbs; I've carried as much as 55 with 2 gallons
of water up onto Mesa de Anguilla in BBNP; gotten up to 50 a few times with
extra water; but generally stay in the 30s to 45 with a lot of food. However,
I'm spending at least $1,000 to reduce my previous basic pack weight of low
30s down to low 20s (not including ice axe, bear can, or winter coat-by the
time I need them I'll be tuned up a lot better-they're 4+ lbs extra),
including Pocketmail & maps & Guidebook section & etc perhaps 21-22 (<21 right now
with no paper added yet; that will vary slightly). How?: Lunar Solo probably,
Luxury Lite possibly, new bag (WM or Golite), some new clothes). Thank
goodness that stuff mostly a 1-time expense. Oh yea the time cost: at least 200
hours getting ready so far, but that's ok - I love it.
Poorly written email, but there it is,
