[pct-l] Guidebooks - don't leave home without them in pieces

Good evening,

Not wanting to cut the guidebook apart I did the photocopy routine for about
1K miles in the Northwest, however I would not do so again. The biggest
problem is I copied the guide pages in black & white rather than the much
more expensive ... at least at that time ... color. As a result the
watercourses which are normally blue, look the same as the trails and any
other feature. Of course, that is a gripe I have with the layout of the
book, also. The trail is black, while it should be red or yellow, etc, so
it will stand out. I carried the guide pages appropriate for the immediate
section, but I seldom looked at them except at night when I briefed for the
next day's march. I much prefer the Forest Service series of PCT maps ...
three for Oregon and two for Washington ... and only break out the guide
when there is some real confusion.
Another problem I had with the guidebook, original pages or copies, was
because I hiked Oregon SoBo. Have you ever tried to read situationally
relative instructions backwards? Believe me, its a real hoot.
