[pct-l] lightweight water purification on the PCT

Hi Bob,

Pristine is a product of the Advance Chemicals Ltd. based in southwestern British Columbia. Toll free 877-533-3901

Sorry for the follow-up. Exactly where in Canada is the company whose website you listed? I could not tell from the site.

BTW, Pristine is the same as Aqua Mira and I have found LDP Camping Foods in Louisiana to be as inexpensive as anywhere. They have a website or try Marcus at 1-800-826-5767

Hi Bob,

I have never found Pristine available in the USA, but it is widely used in Canada and is a Canadian product. I believe that it can be purchased in 2oz and 4oz quantities. I plan to have a supply of Pristine in my bounce box from which to refill my 1oz containers. The 2oz product costs 14.95 US and the 4oz is 22.95. The 2oz size treats 30 gallons of water. Not cheap, but to me it is worth the cost.

Hello yall,

I got Giardia this year and somewhere in the sierra. Like most others I
ditched the water filter early on. I switched to Aqua mira after that but
usually just drank freely from streams. I would recommend just bringing a
bottle full of Flagil along (I'm sure your doc would give it to you).
BEcause, like most of us that hiked this year, you'll probably end up drink
freely out of high mt runoff and will ditch whatever water filter you had.
and then there are the times when you just don;t feel like getting you AM
ready.

So if you do get it Giardia you can just kill it with Flagil right away...

>
>There was an excellent article on backwater bugs in the December `03
>issue of backpacker mag.
>Essentially, the dose of bugs that an average human would have to ingest
>to get sick is way more than the amounts found in MOST tested waters.
>The downside: if you did get infected, the results can get ugly...
>
>I used to drink straight out of streams even in the San Gabriels when I
>was a kid.
>But now I filter, if for nothing else, for the peace of mind that I get
>when I guzzle when I get to water sources.
>
>If you can get your hands on the BP Mag article, I'd recommend reading
>it. It even included electron microscope photos of the bugs that lurk in
>the waters...
>
>For what it's worth, I'd imagine that you'd get dosed with far more bugs
>wiping out in a wave along the So Cal coast...

>
>Good story... most insect larvae, including those in your description,
>would certainly not fall under be under the category of 'microscopic
>fauna'
>and could be filtered out 'cowboy coffee style'. But then... no protein
>:)
>
> >I notice little black spots and small twigs in the water.
> > Slowly the little black spots as the water got warmer began to
move
> >and sprout wings and legs. Then to my surprise the twigs began to
> >sprout wings and legs also. The heating of the water caused
premature
>
> >development of the black spots to water bugs the twigs to dragon
> >flies.
