I'd highly recommend attending the Kickoff.  It's a great opportunity to 
meet your fellow hikers and sort of get into the thru-hiking groove.  Many 
hikers walk from Campo to Lake Morena on Friday, do the kickoff thing friday 
night, saturday, and sunday morning.  Then hike out of Lake Morena after 
sunday breakfast.  The wave does spread out soon enough.

I wouldn't start any earlier than the kickoff.  If you do, you'll likely 
arrive at KM too early to safely enter the Sierra.
