I do the oatmeal thing if I'm waking up in camp. And that on the 3rd or
4th day out (first day IS the trail camp breakfast burrito! I pack in
green onions, cheese, REAL eggs, salsa, tortillas, bacon...YUM!).
What I was driving at was: When I leave my house, driving to the
trailhead, I'll stop off at a restaurant and pick up something to
eat...THEN, I feel bloated while hiking.
I heard fruit digests easy and provides fast energy. Bagels with cream
cheese is a favorite. Any tried and true "First Day" breakfasts out
there?

I've tried a number of different simple breakfasts including oatmeal
with this and that in it, cereal with rehydrated milk, pancakes and
bagels. Of them all, I find that grabbing a bagel and just eating as I
hike my first few switchbacks gives me a lot of energy for the first
couple of hours, at which point I eat another one, which keeps hunger at
bay until lunch. It's not hot, and it's not amazing, but it is simple
carbs, and that is what we need out there from what I have been reading.
I have found that with such a simple breakfast, I am up and out of camp
within less than half an hour from when I wake up on slow days.
Fast days can be as low as ten minutes if I wanted. I never realized how
slow breakfast was until I began doing bagels.

When I go hiking, I tend to eat a fairly large breakfast before I hit
the trail.
So I feel pretty weighed down the first half of the day...
I always feel like it's the last hot meal I'll have for a while, so I
chow down on a big breakfast burrito...then I regret it.
Question:
What foods are high in energy, easily (and quickly) digestible, and
tasty enough to satisfy my "last meal" cravings?
I'll be heading out this weekend for 43 miles and I want to enjoy the
morning as much as the afternoon...
