There are methods of deterring various animals one is likely to
encounter in the wild. Some work better than others.
For instance, wearing bells will alert Black Bears to your presence long
before you see them. In most instances, the brown bear will avoid a
confrontation and run away or hide from a hiker. Carrying high-potency
pepper spray can help deter a brown bear from getting too close if the
audible warning of the bells doesn't work. A quick shot in the snout
usually does the trick.
You can tell when you're hiking in Black Bear country by examining the
droppings left by the Black Bear. You'll find the remains of vegetation,
berries and small animal bones and fur (Bears are omnivorous).
It's also possible to determine if you're hiking in Grizzly Bear
country. Grizzly Bear droppings, upon close examination, have small
bells in it and smell like pepper spray...
Aww. C'mon! you KNEW SOMEONE was gonna dust this one off and post!!!

Just curious if those who have done all or parts
of the PCT feel bear spray is an essential pack
item, or simply unnecessary weight?
Thanks,
Shane
