It's not a matter of how much you carry, so much as how much you drink. I
think of mpl- miles per liter. Normally, I do 3 mpl. In hot conditions, I
bump it up to 4 mpl, even if I have to stop and make myself drink it
(gatorade helps when you have manky water). At that point, how much you
carry is determined by the distance to your next water source. For example,
if you were leaving Tehachapi Pass heading northbound, it's 16 mi. to Golden
Oaks Spring. At 4 mpl, that means you have to leave the trailhead with 4
liters. Even in the driest places, I've never had to carry more than 7
liters at once.
