I too was a life long Tent / tarp man... I used a bivy Sack this year for
the 1st time and found it to be an accetable, alternative to a tent, at
least here in Southern California, I used it in some very windy and cool /
cold conditions and found it as good as a tent.
I used the Black Diamond Winter Bivy

The main disadvantage I see, but didn't encounter is poor weather, any rain
and your hosed.

from anyone having personal eperiences using bivys on long trips. All the
sales people I talk to tell me that they are great, I appreciate their
expert advise however I understand the world of sales. I have always used
tents and/or tarps while on the trail. My big concern with the bivy sleeping
system is condensation on the inside of the bivy (I'll probably buy one with
a head dome).
