Subject: Closures in Washington

FYI: As of 8/17/04 - The PCT is closed in the Crater Lake National Park due
to fires. Park officials are directing hikers to the Crater Lake Rim Trail.

I have talked with folks in Washington - this is what I found out:

Trail Conditions 8/18/04 -
SECTION K
The Railroad Creek Trail is closed due to fire; hikers/riders cannot leave
the PCT at this junction. The residents in the Holden and Lucerne area have
been evacuated, also due to fire.

SECTION L
Rainy Pass: Due to heavy thunder storms and lightning strikes mudslides
have closed Hwy 20 (North Cascade Highway) in the North Cascades National
Park near Rainy Pass, it is expected to re-open Friday, August 20 - The PCT
was closed but was re-opened at 10:30 am 8/18/04 -

SECTION L
Harts Pass: The PCT is closed from Cutthroat Pass to Harts Pass fire and
mudslides. Also, due to heavy rain, three major slides have blocked road
access into this region - the PCT has no access to Harts Pass Road at this
time. Also, numerous lightning strikes have started fires throughout this
section. It is recommended that hikers and riders check with the USFS
office in Winthrop (509-996-4003) for the most current updates.

British Columbia has also experienced the same thunder and lightning storms
resulting in fires and heavy rain.
