[pct-l] ca fire permits

I talked to Palm Springs BLM today.
The gal I spoke to had to check with someone else to get a definitive answer on what can be permitted. Supposed to get back to me...
As with the CDF person I spoke to, she wasn't sure what type of permit I was asking for. She kept asking where I was planning to go to.
She didn't know anything about a yearly permit for campfires. I think what's throwing these folks off is their "knee jerk" reaction that NO ONE is allowed to have ANY fires OF ANY KIND on public lands. She went on to cite the Cottonwood fire as soon as I told her I was a PCTA member and wanted to cook with a backpack stove. (I think we're ALL going to pay for that for a while...). Also, I think that the permit is titled "Campfire Permit". This raises all kinds of alarms with these folks. The CDF guy told me that the entire Southern California area I a restricted fire area. That the Cottonwood fire was started by a backpacker's stove doesn't help.
I'll hit up a USFS office next. See if I get anywhere with them.

To be continued...

as far as i can tell, to be perfectly legal to use a backpack stove in cal, u need a cal campfire permit where it is required. i am starting on sectionf..pct guide states campfire permit reqd. i got my pct thru hiker permit today. on the letter accompanying the permit is the sentence.."local rules still apply including fire and dog leashing requirements". its no big deal to get the fire permit..it doesnt cost anything but as far as i can tell u cannot get one by mail or internet. u must go into a blm or forestry dept. office and get one...i have called 2 blm offices and was told quite 'matter of factly' it could not be mailed.... but considering the fact that a good percentage of the people who need this permit are from out of state, where time and transportation are an issue to begin with, it seems like alot of running around for a free permit? whatta ya think?
