but do they actually patrol there? BP staff, rangers, both?

Furthermore, I guess (and correct me if I'm wrong) they should actually
see me crossing the border to be able to accuse me of it, otherwise I
could always say I was hiking to and from the border. Not that I'd like
to lie that way but the bottom line is, are they actually enforcing
control over the PCT or such border crossings? Am I getting too paranoid
about this? :)
