a quick search on DEET resulted in:

Though government reports relegate a low toxicity, I'll still avoid using it at all costs (remember Agent Orange).
BUT... I still pack it. It works if you need it to.

DEET is NOT toxic to insects. It doesn't kill them, It just fouls up their
senses so they can't find you. DEET has been around a long time, and their
have been a few reports of problems in the several billion applications,
BUT from the stats, DEET is considerably safer than aspirin.
You find DEET in about 20% concentration, because that is how it works the
best, BUT that doesn't take into account dilution by sweat. Applying 100%
DEET to a sweaty body might result in a 20% concentration.
The data on permethrin is considerably more troubling, and if you are going
to be concerned about anything I would worry about that first. Have a look
