I too worship at the REI-alter every other Sunday or so for various
reasons. However, recently the only competition to REI in my area
(Western Mountaineering in Santa Clara, CA) closed down. Not sure if it
was directly because of competition from REI, but now the lack of choice
sucks. I sometimes feel like REI is the Wal-Mart of outdoor stores
(although perhaps not as intentionally predatory).

I also would prefer going to an outdoor store dedicated to
self-propelled activities (i.e. MEC in Canada). Around ski-season my REI
fills up with about 50% alpine ski & snowboard junk. Now there are some
sports you can blow a wad of money on (at REI)!
