[pct-l] Hiking the trail with your dog (horse?)

I don't own a dog.
*sigh*
Not out of preference, but because I know I don't have the time to commit to one, or at least as much time as they deserve.
Not unlike children, they are...

But-

I have encountered many canines on the trail!
Just last weekend, Paul Freiman brought his pooch, Bailey, for the weekend hike!
Nice dog too.
But Paul packed FOR Bailey! Gooood Boy, Paul!

I've seen dogs on the trail with those funny saddle packs. And I'm pretty sure the dog was happy. How do I know?
Well, the one Fido that comes to mind ran ahead of us all, bounding here and there, running back to us for a quick pat on the head, then bounding off up the trail out of sight.
This old boy needed to be whistled back every 5 minutes! At the end of the day, ol' Fido wouldn't sit still. Each squirrel, bird or dropped pine cone- off he goes!
I think he was having a grand time.

And what was Fido packing? His food, water (not a lot, as there was abundant stream water), his dish.......and two bottles of wine and wine glasses!

Man's best friend.

Or a goat?

Seriously, it depends so much on the dog and if the owner is tuned to the
dog's needs. We have a saying with packgoats,
If the goat's not having fun, you're done."
My old border collie ran circles around the horses on 20 mile days, probably
did at least 30 or more miles.
My current BC wouldn't even be able to do that, nor would I ask him. (Or
myself.)
