Beth,
I live in Portland too (aren't we lucky!) and usually manage a yearly
trip to the Sierras. My transition from Portland is a day instead of one
or two weeks, but I've never had significant problems adjusting to the
altitude. If you do have any, it will probably be due to lack of
pre-conditioning. I try to mitigate this with one or two weekend trips
in the Gorge beforehand to toughen my feet and break in my hiking
muscles (the ones that you can't get to at the gym). And May is one of
the best months to do this.

Subject: [pct-l] Plan B
We have been planning to start at Walker Pass sometime in the first half
of
June and hike to Hwy 138 in Oregon, then skip to Stevens Pass and hike
to
Manning. (or hike straight through if the knees, etc. agree to it). I
am
worried about my ability to go from 500 ft here in Portland to the high
Sierra in only one or two weeks of hiking. Mostly because of aerobic
Capacity...
Thanks,
Beth
