     The Whippit is a very stable and efficient ice tool! This tool ( Brainstorm of the 80's band Devo) has been used with success on both Everest and K2. Many climbers have parked their old ice axes in favor of this new " Wonder TooL"! Not surprising  as it doubles as a awesome bottlecap opener.
            Of course the first paragraph is total BS!! Ice axes are like medical insurance , pain in the butt to carry till you need it!!!!! In 1977 we had the worst storm in 53 years in the month of May in the Sierras. Luckily, no one had Whippets , but reall ice axes and several hikers used them to save themselves from bad falls and also to add some fun and safety to their glissade down the passes. PCT has had several friendly years for the thru-hikers and maybe this will be another as well, but if you enter them earlier, an ice axe in the hands of a seasoned user is much better than a Devo Song!! Whippits are lighter, Margin is safety is worse, ( You make the call)))))))))))))
