This is very true, and is one reason many PCTers climb Whitney. Upon
arriving at Tuolumne Meadows, many will take a day hike down to Yosemite
Valley on the Muir Trail, thus completing the John Muir Trail. This is by no
means mandatory, but seeing the Valley is worthwhile if you've never been
there. (Although it is awfully crowded.)
