[pct-l] Why do you hike solo?

My sentiments exactly, Jerry.

To that let me add, when I decide that I want the company of others, I can
talk to, or maybe ask to join, them for awhile. They, of course, are free to
decline in favor of their own privacy, and I must accept that without
dissent.

In point of fact, you're never alone long on the PCT or AT during the normal
hiking season; if you do get yourself into trouble, someone will come along
in a matter of hours. The off-season, the CDT, and the more remote and/or
less travelled wilderness areas are a different kettle of fish. There I
would seriously re-consider any desire to go it alone. Safety concerns tend
to over-ride my need for solitude. We can always stay 300 yards apart, and
"get together" only for the night when one or the other prefers the solo
thing.

I leave when I want, go where I want, at the speed I want, and come back
when I want. I guess it's just all about me.....   ;o) Plus I really
enjoy the solitude.
