There is one small advantage to digital zoom, which may be of use to
thruhikers. As others have pointed out, it does nothing for picture quality or
battery life.
A digitally-zoomed shot uses fewer pixels, and takes less space on your
storage device (flashcard, etc.) The tradeoff is picture quality but, depending on
the subject, you can use the digital zoom to get more photos on a flashcard
before replacing it. Just don't use it for those grand panoramas where you
want to capture all the detail!
