Judson,
I've been using my iPod in the backcountry for a bit. I've got the 40Gig unit, which was a bit overboard in retrospect (I just didn't know HOW MUCH music it would take to fill that much disk space!). I've got it filled to 30Gigs right now, and that included EVERY CD I've ever owned, tons of downloaded .mp3s and roughly 15 unabridged books on CD! Yikes! However, it is nothing short of amazing that I can access what would normally be a hundred pounds or so of CDs in seconds . . .and it weighs somewhere around 6oz.
You will definetly want to add a battery pack (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=T6714LL/A) in which I add those Lithium-Ion AA batteries Energizer makes as they weigh less, don't lose their charge in cold weather, and last 5 to 7 times longer than standard alkalines.
The iPod will also solve the Digital Camera Question which regularly arrives on this list. If you add a Belkin Media Reader ( http://a248.e.akamai.net/7/248/2041/472/store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/t7418lla.pdf)to your bounce box, all you have to do is download all of your camera's .jpegs onto you iPod when in town. With the 10Gigs left on mine, I could fit a massive amount of both .jpegs and even some movie clips that my camera is capable of taking!
groove and move!

I'm interested in getting an ipod or something similar for my hike next
summer. What are people using out there?
And before anyone gets on their soapbox and berates me for listening to
music while in the midst of nature's splendor, save your breath. I'm
hiking
my own hike, and for me, that includes being able to get away from my
own
thoughts occasionally.
