Just before Trail Crest above the trail from Guitar Lake and below the 
trail going to Mt. Whitney are probably 3 places where one could pitch a 
tent. But I would not do so (depends on weather and conditioning).

I don't think it is very far. I did not bother to take water there.
If you get up early from Guitar Lake then Mt. Whitney will be blocking the 
morning sun until you reach Trail Crest. Did use (in September) less water 
than expected.
