If you are talking about the Hwy 4 in California between Yosemite and
Lake Tahoe, there will likely be TONS of snow on May 30th. Whether
or not its "too dangerous" is a rather personal judgement; what some
people consider too dangerous might be "fun" to someone else.
This also will depend on how much snow falls in the Sierra this year,
and specifically how much snow falls in late season. If winter
abruptly ends early and warm weather moves in and melts the snow, you
might be ok. But more than likely, there will be HUGE amounts of
deep snow on all the high passes and snow could cover the trail for
many miles. In fact, you could easily get snowed on in May in the
Sierra.
This is also early enough in the season so that there will be few if
any tracks from previous hikers and you will likely not see very many
people on the trail at this time so far north.
My advice: if you do not have fairly extensive snow-travel experience
in the mountains, then your should reschedule or choose another
area. On may 30th, I would be very surprised if there wasn't at the
very least fairly significant snow intermittently scattered about
most areas of the trail between Kennedy Meadows south and the
Canadian border, which is about 1800 miles of the trail (there will
be some low spots that won't have snow).
Good luck.
peace,
dude
