[pct-l] GIS layer for PCT

Thanks for the explanation, David. However, simply taking "a relatively
dense series of GPS
coordinates all along the pCT" won't work unless you have a base layer that
is more accurate than the USGS topo quads. I'm told by the authors of the
guide book that even the compass bearings of the trail on the map sometimes
don't match the compass bearings on the ground, as the topo contours are not
always correctly located. Only a few degrees could send you off crosscountry
over a ridge instead of down the trail into a canyon. Fortunately, most
hikers only look at the line on the map, match it to the topography, and go.
GPS really isn't needed on the PCT except maybe in the winter.

Good luck on your project. It sounds like fun.
