I agree 100%.  I have some intermediate climbing experience 
(including glacier experience on Shasta, Gannet Peak, Ixta, and 
Orizaba) and I have met more than one person whose life was save by 
the leash on their ice axe.  Incidentally, I also met a guy on the 
PCT in 98 who said that his leash saved him while he was idiotically 
climbing  over a pass in a thunderstorm and slipped when a nearby 
lightening strike startled him.
