Well jeepers, just when I had my mind made up ----What about the Sierra
Designs and REI 12 ouncers? Maybe I'll go over to the REI main store in Seattle and
have them hose me down at their "test" facility while wearing a few different
rain parkas. My experience has been that I get soaked in a heavy rain after a
couple of hours no matter what I wear (currently a one pound 5 year old
gore-tex that I used on my thru hike), so I am not expecting total protection. Just
something lighter than what I have now that works as well at a reasonable
cost.
I don't wear rain pants either except for glissading, because the newest
regular pants material dries so fast
As for definitions, I consider a "parka" to be a shell that goes over an
insulated jacket -- such as polar tech 200 - to keep out moisture and wind. A
one unit jacket/parka just doesn't give me the layering choices I prefer
Now on to Jeffery's web site ---
