There is a commercial bus route that parallels the trail, following 395 from 
Ridgecrest to Reno, stopping in every town. I took it last summer from Mammoth 
to Carson City. While it doesn't get you to the trail head, it's very close 
and it's cheap (Lone Pine to Bishop is $6). Here is their link.
