First Golowgo far got to take to one of the infamous " Unforunates" from
1977. Tom works up there in one of the Hiker/skier shops . I got to talk to him a
few minutes this summer. Unforunates got their name because of all their bad
luck on the trail. ( Like a state of the art , REI Grand Hotel burning after a
back luck with a stove,etc.,etc.)
67 miles?? A might hard to believe as this is like breaking the long jump
record by 5 feet. Flyin Brian and Stephan both did hikes in the 83 or 84 days.
Brian was a very experienced thru hiker who had been hiking since the first
of the year . If someone was to do a 79 day hike , this seems possible, but to
do it in 2 weeks shorter time by a very young hiker is hard to believe. Most
endurance runners, climbers, hikers tend top be in the early to mid thirtys.
Look at Willie Unsold, Tom Horbein, Jim Whitaker. All in the early to mid 30's
at the peak of their game. In fact , in most sports , strength and endurance
are not the assets of the young. ( Quickness and short term speed is) The
average gold medal wrestler in the Olympics is 27 y/o. Few guys in the Olympics are
wrestling there in their teens or even early 20's.
