[pct-l] Wind Speed Measurement

Not a wind-measuring _method_ per se, but I bet one of these simple
gauges would work pretty good:

Used by "ULTRALIGHTERS" everywhere.

>How to measure the wind speed when you are on the trail? You can buy a
>digital weather station if you want to report accurately or you can
>estimate the speed.
>My method of estimating wind speed involves the use of my hiking poles.
>Being a cheapskate I use ex ski hire poles (free). I have one pole with a
>basket and one without. Using the "without basket" pole I suspend the pole
>using the wrist strap. The wind blows the pole to an angle between vertical
>for no wind and horizontal for very strong wind. The angle defines the wind
>speed. The angle can be measured against the other pole. To calibrate the
>angle to wind speed, in your car hang the pole out the window at different
>speeds.
>This method works as long as the wind isn't strong enough to blow you over
>(this happened to me at 7000 feet near Mt Kosiuszko in Australia).
>Any other methods?
