[pct-l] Mt. Whitney Expedition



i'd have to agree, you will likely NOT get a permit to hike up from 
the portal.  ...and they do check permits there.

you don't need a thru-hiker permit, just a back-country permit.  you 
can enter via Kearsarge pass/Onion Valley Trail Head outside of 
Independence.  the entire hike would be about 46 miles this way.
