Just heard that 9 climbers are missing on Mt. Rainier. A cell phone call to
911 was sent around 2p.m, saying they were disoriented in whiteout conditions
on the Emmons Glacier (one of the "normal" routes) with 2 people suffering from
frost bite. Last year I was on the same route when a white out fog (no snow
or wind involved) enveloped us at 13000' + and I called off the climb rather
than wander around blindly in a very dangerous crevasse field. We were able to
follow a wanded path and footprints in reverse
Once again, it looks like the weather report was ignored by people
determined to climb on a fixed weekend schedule -- or what I call weather roulette.
The weather down here in the lowlands was not indicative of a good climbing
day. We had a very rare thunderstorm and torrential down pours in places,
including my place -- all predicted in advance. Regardless, my prayers go out to them
