Cables Are Up on Half Dome!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The National Park Service recently announced that the
cables to the top of Half Dome have been installed for
the season. The cables assist hikers up the final 900
feet of the climb on the dome's steep back side. The
cables are taken down each fall to avoid snow load
damage.
Many visitors consider the walk to Half Dome to be the
ultimate Yosemite hike. The very strenuous trip is 17
miles (27.4 km) round-trip and takes from 10 to 12
hours.
The hike to Half Dome can be made from Happy Isles in
Yosemite Valley via the Mist Trail or the John Muir Trail,
or from Glacier Point via the Panorama Trail.
Tioga, Glacier Point Roads to Open Saturday
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yosemite National Park Superintendent Michael J.
Tollefson announced today that both the Glacier Point
Road and Tioga Pass Road will open this
weekend.

Beginning at noon on Saturday, May 31, the Glacier
Point Road and the Tioga Pass Road, the continuation
of Highway 120 between Crane Flat and Lee Vining, will
open for the season.

Visitor services are not yet available on either road. No
drinking water, gasoline, or food service will be available
until water and wastewater systems can be put in
service. Services will be expanded as conditions permit.
There are no weight restrictions in effect.

With the warm weather there are lots of wildflowers
and plenty of run-off in the park. It looks like a perfect
weekend for seeing the Tioga high country for the first
time this year.

New Sibley Guide to Western Birds
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Sibley Guide to Birds has quickly become
the new standard of excellence in bird identification
guides, covering more than 810 North American birds in
amazing detail.
Now comes a new portable guide from David Sibley that
every birder will want to carry into the field. Compact
and comprehensive, this new guide features 703
bird species plus regional populations found west of the
Rocky Mountains.
Smaller than the Sibley guide to the entire U.S., it
includes accounts with stunningly accurate
illustrations-more than 4,600 in total-with descriptive
caption text pointing out the most important field
marks.
The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Western
North America is an indispensable resource for all
birders seeking an authoritative and portable guide to
the birds of the West.
The new Sibley western bird guide retails for $19.95,
but with their 15% discount, Yosemite Association
members can purchase it now for only $16.96!
Should National Park Jobs Be Privatized?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A recent article in the Fresno Bee reports that
President Bush has asked his staff to investigate the
possibility of using "competitive sourcing" to replace
some 11,000 of the National Park Service's
approximately 22,000 full-time and seasonal jobs with
employees from the private sector.

The notion inspires efficiency experts and government
streamliners, while it worries some park lovers.
Questions have been raised over whether market
efficiencies clash with aesthetic values and resource
protection.

The competitive outsourcing plans themselves are a
work in progress. Officials are first identifying what job
categories might be appropriate for the private sector:
law enforcement isn't, for instance, but lawn work is.
Then, officials are commissioning studies of the
individual jobs before deciding whether to proceed.

Current plans identify 335 jobs in the Park Service's San
Francisco-based Pacific West region as likely private
sector candidates. These include 111 maintenance jobs
at Golden Gate Recreation Area and 67 maintenance
jobs at Mount Rainier National Park. Officials also have
identified 157 job vacancies scattered throughout the
region that could be immediately converted to the
private sector.

New DVD with Yosemite Climbing History Available
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The rich and compelling saga of the free-spirited
Yosemite climbers whose contributions to
mountaineering techniques, equipment and ethics
allowed them to be the first to conquer the legendary
big walls of the park is engagingly told in a new DVD
entitled Vertical Frontier - A History of the Art,
Sport and Philosophy of Rock Climbing in
Yosemite.
Illustrated by spectacular old and new footage shot on
those granite walls, the story is told by the climbers
whose artistry and sheer determination allowed them to
launch a sport now enjoyed by millions around the
world.
Their ranks include David Brower, Warren Harding,
Royal Robbins, Yvon Chouinard, Tom Frost, Jim Bridwell,
Lynn Hill, and many more. Their epic endeavors
range from the first siege ascent of El Capitan, which
took 45 days spread over a year and a half, to today's
speed climbers who conquer the same route in under
three hours.
Banff Mountain Film Festival, retails for $20. As always,
Yosemite Association receive a 15% discount
cables to the top of Half Dome have been installed for
the season. The cables assist hikers up the final 900
feet of the climb on the dome's steep back side. The
cables are taken down each fall to avoid snow load
damage.
