[pct-l] South Lake Tahoe
South Lake Tahoe - it can make a fine layover if you need city stuff and if
you aren't there on a week-end when prices double/triple in the motels
(Friday/Sat). I don't think any motels are doing pickups, but hitching
works. Not always the easiest - but with patience you can get both ways.
There are a couple of campgrounds (private, expensive but convenient; city
one near the lake and is well priced). They do get full. Several Post
Offices (all same Zip code), main one is closer to Nevada and the city
campground. However, the malls, grocery stores, etc. and cheapest motels are
right when you get into town when coming from the PCT. Great Pizza
restaurant right in the area. Use the city bus and not the tour bus to get
around (like to casinos). If you are hungry, the buffets will lose money on
you.
At Donner Summit (about 3-4 days further), check out Pooh Corner. A
fabulous, restful stop with trail angels Bill & Molly Person. They are on
the lake below the pass.
