[pct-l] RE: PCT-L digest, Vol 1 #871 - 21 msgs

Hi everyone:

Thanks so much for your input - I've been reading this list for about 3
months and have gotten some very valuable insight. My trail name is
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and my 500 mile hike is a
fundraiser for a non-profit organization called Voices for Children
(www.voices4children.com). I'll be hiking the Oregon section beginning
June 15th and am flying into Medford from San Diego, but need to start
the trail at Ashland (a long and detailed story that I'll spare you
from). Can anyone tell me how I can find a ride from Medford to
Ashland? Either by bus, taxi, or trail angel? I would appreciate your
advice if you have it.

CASA

The Big Bear City Fire Station lets thru-hikers camp and shower - and
they =
should be starting to pass thru BBC any day now. So you could get some
fir=
st-hand advice! If you do some day hikes or overnights in your area
soon, =
you'll have lots of thru-hiker company on the trail. The one danger
hiking=
with inexperienced people (of whatever age) is if they get separated,
pani=
c, and wander out of earshot off the trail. So: 1) they have to
understand=
why they have to stick with you. 2) If they lose sight of you, they
STOP,=
yell, blow whistle, may use an FRS "walkie talkie" radio. 3) they each
hav=
e a sleeping bag or plenty of clothes, shelter (space blanket or
poncho/tar=
p), food, and water and are mentally prepared to solo camp right where
they=
are or in a sheltered spot very close by. This is not meant to
discourage=
you and your daughters - quite the reverse. I think you are safer on
the =
trail than you are in town, as long as you have what you need and the
sense=
to use it. Hey, you could practice by camping at the Fire Station with
th=
e rest of the hikers!

Hi there,
You know I was not at the Kickoff this year either, however I do not
think
there is an actual list of the Water Caches. The procedure in the past
has
been: Meadow Ed sits down and every one who is interested sit down also
and
write down the information that he has to give out. They then note it in
their trail books or on paper. Now the exception being the big cache
put
out by Charlie Jones and the Sierra club at the San Felipe Hills and
this
has been posted twice on the list in the past few weeks, especially
right
after the Kickoff. Also the new PCT Book of Southern California does
list
the water supplies, much more than they did in the old book.

Anyone can correct me if I am wrong.
Cheers,

There's a good chance those that were at the bash & aren't hiking, had
no
reason to write down cache locations. I've got the new book Marge
references. Assuming you're only looking for one section, I'm willing
to
copy & send out that section-specific water info.

I would like someone smarter than me to explain about the Spectra
Material
used in the New G5 Pack. My Google search came up with some of the
following and none of it makes any sense to me.

1=2E Spectra is the ideal material for ballistic protection in aircraft
components because its strength to weight ratio is much greater than
other
substances such as fiberglass, carbon fiber composites or aramid
fibers,=94
said Scott Savian, Marketing, C&D Aerospace. =93Spectra has already
proven
itself in bulletproof vests, tanks and combat helicopters.=94

2=2E Fluorocarbon Wind On Leader 220 lb Test. Fluorocarbon wind on
leaders
200 lb spectra 220 lb Mamoi Fluorcarbon 25 feet over all length.

3=2E Many informations about light and spectra (in French)
Ce que nous apprend la lumi=E8re.
Le spectre du Soleil
Construisez un spectroscope

4=2E A cornerstone of Spectra's patented technology, shear mode
actuation of
the piezoelectric material allows Spectra to create many jet actuators
using
a single flat piece of piezoelectric material. The piezoelectric
material,
as part of its fabrication, is poled. To accomplish this, a strong
electric
field is applied to the piezoelectric material and then removed. This
results in a poling field with the same orientation as the initial
electric
field.

So, will I be wearing a bullet proof pack.

Or: My french is rusty, I can only read the cereal boxes, do not know

Tamara,

Dangerous is driving on the freeway, crossing the street, or going to
the ATM machine. Slip and fall accidents in the house account for more
deaths and injuries than are experienced by thru-hiking. Your parents
fear what they don't know -- it is very human to do so. As a woman who
hikes and bikes in the mountains alone, you learn that there's less to
be afraid of in the mountains than down in civilization. Bad guys are
generally lazy, and they're generally not up in the mountains, waiting
for some helpless sort to come along. The most likely place you can get
victimized as a woman is in the grocery store or mall parking lot, yet
we go to those places regularly.

Preparation is key. You have to have the proper gear for the conditions
you may encounter, meaning you must know what kind of conditions you'll
encounter! You would do well to spend some time reading, planning, and
conversing with hikers who've thru-hiked with kids, learning how to get
your pack weight down (and your daughters' too), and doing some weekend
trials with your daughters. Practice and experimentation will show you
what works best for your "unit" (who carries what, what you really need
and what you can live without).

We are hosts in Agua Dulce, and over the years we've seen families
hiking together, dads with kids, moms with kids, and grandparents with
kids. The kids love it, and handle the experience better than many
adults (they're more adaptable, I suspect). You are welcome to come up
to our home the weekends before, during, and after Memorial Day weekend;
that is when the vast majority of thru-hikers arrive in Agua Dulce.
There will be many hikers to talk to, and learn from. Your parents will
feel much better when they know more about what you plan to do, and what
a wonderful community of people are out there. If possible, you are
welcome to bring them along to our place, too. Let me know if you're
interested, and I send you the address.

Don't let anyone stand in the way of your dreams. Teach your children
young to appreciate nature and to love, respect, and protect our natural
wonders -- not to fear them. It's just not the same viewing it all from
the confinement of a car, or in some manicured public campground. They
will learn that less is more, that life is full of unlimited adventures,
and that they can be self-sustaining. You will give your daughters a
great gift, one that will last a lifetime.

Good luck to you.

More about spectra than you ever wanted to know

http://www.spectrafiber.com/

Spectra=AE fiber is one of the world's strongest and lightest fibers.
A
bright white polyethylene, it is, pound-for-pound, ten times stronger
than
steel, more durable than polyester and has a specific strength that is
40
percent greater than aramid fiber.

Spectra=AE fiber is made from ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene
that
is used in a patented gel- spinning process. Polyethylene is a
remarkably
durable plastic, and scientists at Spectra Technologies have captured
the
tremendous natural strength in the molecular backbone of this everyday
plastic to create one of the world's strongest and lightest fibers. The
gel-spinning process and subsequent drawing steps allow Spectra=AE fiber
to
have a much higher melting temperature (150=B0C or 300=B0F) than
standard
polyethylene.

With outstanding toughness and extraordinary visco-elactic properties,
Spectra=AE fiber can withstand high-load strain-rate velocities. Light
enou=
gh
to float, it also exhibits high resistance to chemicals, water, and
ultraviolet light. It has excellent vibration damping, flex fatigue and
internal fiber-friction characteristics, and Spectra=AE fiber's low
dielectric constant makes it virtually transparent to radar.

Spectra=AE fiber is used in numerous high-performance applications,
includi=
ng
police and military ballistic-resistant vests, helmets and armored
vehicles, as well as sailcloth, fishing lines, marine cordage, lifting
slings, and cut-resistant gloves and apparel.

Honeywell also converts Spectra=AE fiber into the Spectra Shield=AE
family =
of
specialty composites for armor and other applications.

Just a suggestion, but I just read Carol "Brawny" Wellman's book "My
Journey
to freedom and Ultralight Backpacking" which might help you through this
difficult period. Part of her story is about divorce and moving on
through
long distance hiking. I think it takes great strength to go ahead with
plans others are putting down, and that your plan to hike the PCT is
awesome! As far as hiking with your kids, if you don't have very much
experience you might find it productive to have someone who is while
they
are with you. I think the idea of introducing youngsters to the beauty
and
independence of hiking is very important, esp. today when conservation
of
nature is not especially valued in the White House. As for your dream
being
"...stupid & dangerous..." for sure something you want to do like this
is
NOT stupid, and with proper preparation it is not dangerous either.
Statistically you are in much greater danger driving your car to the
grocery
store.

Don't let other people's fears deter you from accomplishing your dreams;
in
fact, after going through a bad divorce a hike like this could help you
redefine your goals in life. The above-mentioned book can be found at
http://trailquest.net/dlgcmyjourney.html
Best of luck,

Jared McClain, starting PCT May 17 2003

Uh, yeah, already did that, but I'll do it again!!! Here it is with a
few
updates as noted:

>From the ADZPCTKO water report April 26 for those who were not there
but
heading out soon:

* Campo Creek and the creek beyond flowing.
* Hauser Creek is dry.
* Lake Morena Campground has water.
* Cottonwood Creek is dry.
* Boulder Oaks Campground closed but water is on.
* Kitchen Creek has water.
* Fred Canyon has water.
* Long Canyon has more water.
* Burnt Rancheria Campground water is on.
* GATR/Penny Pines/Noble Canyon Trail water is on.
* Tank is full at Pioneer Mail Picnic Area.
* Lucky 5 cache in place, will be restocked April 27.
* NO water in tank at Mason Valley Truck Trail.
* NO water in Chariot Canyon at PCT and NONE for one mile downstream and
one-half mile upstream. Some suggest going further upstream, but I would
suggest the next source.
* Water in tank at Rodriguez Spur Truck Trail where PCT goes through a
cattle gate. Tank is 75 feet to the left when northbound.
* Cache at Scissors Crossing will be restocked periodically.
* San Felipe Creek is flowing.
* Water cache in San Felipe Hills at 3rd gate (at top of Map A-12) - had
39
gallons on April 29, with another 27 gallons 1.25 miles off trail.Warner
Springs town.
* Agua Caliente Creek is flowing.
* Lost Valley Spring flowing well.
* NO water in private tank near Chihuahua Valley Road. NEW April 30:
I've
heard a cache will be set up there on May 3 and restocked on May 17.
This
may not be reliable given the remote location, so if there's water take
only
what you need for the 10 miles to Tule Spring.
* Tule Spring tank has water.
* NO water in Nance Canyon.
* Cache on sandy jeep road (Table Mtn Truck Trail?)

REMEMBER: Cache's could be gone when you arrive, so do NOT count on
them.
Take only what you need, preferably no more than 2 quarts. If you have
extra
water, leave it!

Subject: [pct-l] mp3 or mini-disk?

can i hear some comments (pros/cons) of each system from the high tech
junkies out there?

i've done far too much hiking with only the FM dial as my audio
companion,
and while i have come to enjoy country and pop 40 music, i would
appreciate
some variety and having my own music to choose from.

i have thought about the i-pod but i need a FM receiver as well (i don't
have that much country music). i am also concerned that the AC adapter
for
the i-pod may be excessively large.

a FM receiver and standard AA/AAA battery power are key features for me.

any feed back from the list will be much appreciated!

sincerely,
mike d-low-renzo

I think the mini disk player would take more power. I can get 8+ hours
of
playing time from a pair of AAA batteries in my Samsung Yepp MP3 player.

With an MP3 player with removable media (smart card or flash or such) it
is
pretty easy to swap out the cards.

If you resample your mp3s to a lower rate, you can get most of the files
down to about half the file size. The quality suffers but I can fit
about
60 songs on the 128Meg smart card. You could mail them home for new
music,
if you have someone who can do that for you.

I use the dBpowerAMP Music Converter, http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm
to
do the resampling. I'm sure there are other programs that do the same.

The YP-NDU64NF Techno Yepp player has a built in FM radio. I'd bet that
other do too.

It seems the forest service is publicly acknowledging
how porous the boarders are in our forests. i would
not be surprised if they start cracking down this
summer. Check out this article if your interested:

Sony claims that the S2 Sports Net MD Walkman Player/Recorder ($149) has
up
to 54 hours playback using one =93AA=94 battery (LP4 Mode). LP4 mode
would=
 be
the lowest quality mode of recording (and conversely the mode with the
highest storage capacity).

Any mini-disk users out there care to offer comments on battery life?

Thanks to all the great folks at the kick-off party last weekend! Had a
great time and always happy to see old friends and meet the 2003
thru-hiker
crowd.
The kick-off gathering is as grassroots as it gets. Where else can you
guide book authors, pack designers, trail angels and thru-hikers all
sharing
a burger under a tree 10 feet from the PCT!!! Only problem is that time
goes
too fast . It is amazing how many good ideas come out of this gathering
with
regard to gear. Many ideas from the gear contest become standards on the
trail within a year. ( Of course , Greg's hiking pole / combo fishing
pole
may need a few more bugs removed to make it into the mainstream hiker
comunity!!!!!!) Monte
