[pct-l] Re: first time sectin hiker needs advice.

Just a suggestion, but I just read Carol "Brawny" Wellman's book "My Journey
to freedom and Ultralight Backpacking" which might help you through this
difficult period. Part of her story is about divorce and moving on through
long distance hiking. I think it takes great strength to go ahead with
plans others are putting down, and that your plan to hike the PCT is
awesome! As far as hiking with your kids, if you don't have very much
experience you might find it productive to have someone who is while they
are with you. I think the idea of introducing youngsters to the beauty and
independence of hiking is very important, esp. today when conservation of
nature is not especially valued in the White House. As for your dream being
"...stupid & dangerous..." for sure something you want to do like this is
NOT stupid, and with proper preparation it is not dangerous either.
Statistically you are in much greater danger driving your car to the grocery
store.

Don't let other people's fears deter you from accomplishing your dreams; in
fact, after going through a bad divorce a hike like this could help you
redefine your goals in life. The above-mentioned book can be found at

Best of luck,
