You don't have explain, I know how it is.  The general rule I heard is from
6-8 weeks before you SHOULD hike again.  I'm under the impression you can't
damage it much further and if you can stand the pain there's no other reason
not to hike.

Depending on the severity and the associated pain, it's up to you.
Personally, I wouldn't cancel a hike unless, or until, I couldn't walk.
