Not true. The "California Campfire Permit" is valid for the calendar year.
HOWEVER, you do have to check to make sure fires are permitted. Also, in
some areas, during some parts of the year, fires are only allowed at certain
places, such as "yellow post sites" or "fire safe areas." Some of these are
first-come first-served, others by specific permit. This permit is for fire
only and is not a wilderness permit. A federal wilderness permit issued in
California serves as a campfire permit in that wilderness.

Not true in California. Outside developed campgrounds, stoves and lanterns
require the same permit as campfires. The difference is that sometimes
stoves and lanterns may be allowed when wood (and maybe charcoal) fires are
not.

California Campfire Permits are free, but must be picked up in person at a
USFS, CDF, or BLM office.

This site http://totalescape.com/active/camp/pass/fire.html has a good
overview and a picture of the permit. The official word is at the CDF site
http://www.fire.ca.gov/education/campfirepermits.asp .
